Book Review: Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

A friend recommended Big Little Lies over the summer. She mentioned that it was becoming a TV movie that was being produced by Reese Witherspoon’s production company. I let the book collect dust on the shelf until after I finished, A Man Called Ove and was looking for simgresomething good to zip through. I have to admit this book was better than I anticipated for the a “Beach Weekend” read.

The story centers around a Beach community that is a suburb of Sydney.  The book opens with a death. A whodunit of sorts. You begin to deduct who didn’t die but you don’t know who did or why. The three main characters are Jane, Madeline, and Celeste. Each woman is grappling with their own secrets, shortcomings and insecurities. All while trying to navigate the day-to-day grind of motherhood, who they are and personal valuation of their self-worth.

imgres-1I must admit the book was good not great. I figured out the main suspenseful elements of the plot 1/3 of the way into the book. Some of the build up could have been used for more robust character development instead of superfluous antidotes. All in all I liked the book enough to write a review, recommend it as a easy page-turner. I also plan on watching the  HBO for the 8-part miniseris starring Resse Witherspoon as Madeline, Nicole Kidman as Celeste, Zoe Kravitz as Bonnie, Shailene Woodley as Jane, and  Laura dern as Renata.

Book Review: The Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes

I recently have been reading more then I have in years (a negative side effect of Graduate School). With the combination of audible and some much needed downtime, I have compiled a list of books I want to finish by the end of the year. One of the books was, “The Year of Yes.”

I am not sure what I expected but what I found was a hilariously intimate and raw journey of self discovery. The book was a poignant reminder that everyday we have choices and finding the things that make us joyful is one of them. I was surprised how many times I totally identified with Shonda and how much her words made me lift the mirror to myself and the life I have been living. I highly recommend the book! Happy Reading.
